I absolutely love letterpress printing and Megan from Typothecary Letterpress in Lancaster, PA, is a master at it! Megan has been a friend of mine ever since she printed the business cards for my business TCG Advertising & Design (see above). In times of things being printed inexpensively, and everything looks the same, letterpress printing stands out from the crowd because it has a handmade, one-of-a-kind charm. Hope you love her work as much as I do! Enjoy!
I’m Megan Zettlemoyer, I’m originally from the Reading area, and moved to Lancaster, Pa, just last year. My studio has been in Lancaster since December 2015.
Is creating art your passion and/or your profession?
Creating things has always been a passion of mine. I am just lucky enough to have a career that allows me to be creative too. I am a graphic designer as well as a letterpress printer. So I get to create beautiful things all day long and then some days I am lucky enough to get to print them via letterpress and make them even more beautiful!
How did you get into doing it?
I was exposed briefly in college at FIT in NYC, but I sort of forgot about it. I was re-introduced when we came to Lancaster for a First Friday back in 2009 and we saw a printing demonstration put on by the Heritage Press Museum at 342 N Queen St., here in the city of Lancaster (back then, they were located above the Visitors Center). I saw what they were doing, and realized I needed to be doing it too! I joined their club and started learning how to run presses and set type. I took every class I could find from North Carolina to Pennsylvania to learn as much as possible and then I started buying presses and have never looked back once!
What is your driving force?
My driving force is really my clients and the people who genuinely appreciate what I do. I have been so lucky to meet and work with such amazing people. I love that I can take something that someone has been dreaming up and turn into a reality. Then I get to watch their faces light up when they see it for the first time. It never gets old!
What kind of work you do and why?
I print a variety of things from wedding invitations, business cards, photo mats, posters, holiday cards, fine art prints, to a line of goods for retail. Letterpress is such a versatile medium. Each type of press has its purpose in the shop and each lets me create something different. So depending on what has been ordered that week, I am always printing something different which is part of what I love about my job. No two days are the same!
Some fun facts.
The presses in the shop date back as far as the late 1800s. The newest press is from the 1970s, but they all still run great! We do offer workshops as well as studio tours/visits by appointment. We are also hosting a print crawl around downtown Lancaster for First Friday in September. Keep an eye out on Facebook for details coming soon!
